One great painter is
Henry Ossawa Tanner [1859-1937], his work is often quite reminiscent of John Singer Sargent's [1856-1925]
watercolors. Tanner's piece above is "
Gateway, Tangier". The Moroccan and Arab world was a popular theme for many painters before and around the turn of the century. Tanner also created the beautiful "
The Arch", and the famous "
The Annunciation", where the angel Gabriel is a glowing light. Tanner also has the distinction of being one of the pre-eminent early black painters.
