One great modern painter in the vein of
Sargent is R.H. Ives
Gammell [1893-1981]. His work has a huge garnish of symbolism but basically has the forthright, confident feeling of William-Adolphe
Bouguereau. He was influenced by the words of Jung, and his paintings have a beautiful classic crispness--but not over-starched like the early 18th century neo-classists.
He's kind of like a better version of Rockwell [who I like] who paints more fluidly and focuses on very abstract, beautiful scenes.
Look at
this site to see a lot of his work with some context around it--it's even more absorbing if you like Jung or symbolism, or clean/neo-classic modernist era painters. Or Jean Cocteau's films.
